Overview of education

The Depart of Disaster Psychiatry aims to understand the mental health of the victims from the Great East Japan Earthquake, examine the state of mental health care, and identify the symptoms and develop treatments for mental illnesses, such as depression and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As for our graduate students, we would like to guide them to not only discover basic knowledge, but to also understand the importance of research that benefits society. We also would like to nurture researchers who think and act for themselves.

Research topics are decided after considering and discussing the some of the following: ongoing research topics of professors and staff, researcher’s concrete initiative and desire, skills and ability, and their desired path. We also have research guidance for other staff and senor year graduate students.

For master’s students, their goal is to first present at a national academic meeting.

For doctoral students, their goal is to not only present at a national academic meetings but to also present at an international academic meetings in English. (Please click here to see which academic meetings we participate in.) Furthermore, they will make efforts to improve their solid communication skills and presentation skills through regular seminars, study groups, daily discussions, and data reports.

For master’s students, by no means is it required to complete an original thesis. However, their goal should be to have enough research results to complete an original thesis. For doctoral students, it’s required that an original thesis be completed. Therefore, we will guide students in producing an original thesis.

In order to further biological research in psychiatry and neurology it is required students are able to do investigational and experimental procedures. However, that is not enough. What is most essential when conducting research is to understand the context of the research and to clearly define the goal and objective of the research. Before beginning an experiment, it is important to read and carefully examine theses related to your research. Furthermore, it will become essential to periodically check chief research journals and promptly know new research findings.

Anyone can conduct experiments according to a manual, but compared to a good researcher and a novice researcher, there are often big differences in the results. In order to become a researcher who does well at experiments, the following are important.

Academic seminars are held often at Tohoku University. Please by all means participate in ones you are interested in. People who willingly participate in seminars, who exchange ideas and information with their seniors and colleagues, who are motivated by research, who actively exchange and discuss ideas, and who are supporting their juniors are spreading insight on research and are connected to each other through the development of their own research.

The Department of Disaster Psychiatry is not just a medical school, but it’s an organization of professors, staff members, and students from various backgrounds. Our current affiliated professors and students have come from various departments, such as the school of medicine, school of pharmacy, school of dentistry, school of veterinary medicine, school of agriculture, school of science, school of literature and education, and school of psychology. After graduation students have the choice to return to clinical studies and their respective departments or, possibly continue their research at another domestic or international research facility. For students who will continue research at another facility, it would be ideal if you could do joint research projects with us.

Fully supporting the path of people’s dreams!
